History
Thunder appears at the time Roman under the name of Tornodurum .De Tornodurum with Tonnerre
Formerly, Tonnerre was called Tornodurum, “fortress” for the Celts, it was it capital of the “Pagus tornodorensis”. Here, on the valley of the Armançon, created for itself the County of Thunder, which was used as point of passage between Paris and Dijon, at the time where the king of France had aimings on the Duché of Burgundy. But from or this atypical name comes? The etymologies of Thunder would come, for the Celtic time, of “Torn”, drifting of the name of an obscure local divinity; others bring it back to “Douros”: fortress, finally another denomination would correspond to “Dour” in connection with a “place close to the torrent”. It is also possible that the three solutions meet in only one:
-
a divinized place: 1782, updated of the cavities containing weapons and ornaments, currencies and jewels related to the worship of divinities.
- the fortress dominating Tonnerre would have been located on the spot “Mount Bleating” and “Old Castles” delivering, of many ancient vestiges.
-
As for the “divinized source”, the vestige is of an obvious obviousness, since it is about the Fosse Dionne.
