the Three Musketeers is a Romance of Alexandre Dumas, initially published in serial in the newspaper the Century from March to July 1844. It was published in 1844 with the Baudry editions. It is republished in 1846 at J.B. Fellens and L.P. Dufour with illustrations of Alive Beaucé.

Synopsis

The novel tells the adventures of a Gascon desilvered 18 years, of Artagnan, assembled with Paris to make career. It binds friendship with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, Mousquetaires of the king Louis XIII. These four men will be opposed to the Prime Minister, the Cardinal of Richelieu and with its agents, of which beautiful and mysterious the MILADY de Winter, to save the honor of the queen of France Anne of Austria. With its many combat and its romantic bounces, as the adventure of Artagnan and Constance Bonacieux the Three musketeers is the typical example of the Cloak and dagger novel .

first Monday of the month of April 1625, the borough of Meung ” sees the young person of Artagnan, junior by Gascogne, energy in Paris to seek fortune in the musketeers, to be made humiliate by Rochefort in the presence of beautiful MILADY, all two agents of Richelieu. The King had asked the queen to appear with his tags with the ball of the Aldermen, given 12 days later, with the council of the Cardinal. D' Artagnan goes back to Paris right in time for the ball and receives its reward.

After its return, Constancy being imprisoned on order of Richelieu, and Artagnan will find his/her friends, scattered on the road, to leave to its research. It will find Porthos wounded with ankle as well as in its pride, Aramis which it will succeed in drawing aside from the orders thanks to a letter of Mrs. de Chevreuse, and finally Athos which will play and lose. They return to four to Paris where Mr. de Tréville teaches them that they leave to shift and thus which they were to prepare their equipment. The hero of the Three musketeers is based on the historical character of Charles de Batz de Castelmore d' Artagnan of the regiment of Louis XIII of the Cadets by Gascogne. Its name is quoted in the memories and the correspondences of the time, in particular at Madam de Sévigné. Alexandre Dumas had like sources of the Mémoires of Mr. D' Artagnan Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras going back to 1700, therefore several years after the death of Artagnan. The project is in the beginning an idea of Auguste Maquet, with which Dumas collaborates in the drafting of the novel.

The novel falls under a very popular kind at the time, that of the Roman-feuilleton.
