Thrash metal
The thrash metal is a sub-genus of the heavy metal. Its origins go back to the any end of the year 1970, when certain groups started to mix the speed of the Punk rock'n'roll with element of NWOBHM. But it is with the beginning of the year 1980 that Metallica will popularize the kind. The thrash metal is in particular characterized by a fast and violent music. The word thrash means “to beat, to strike” in English, not to confuse with trash , which means “dustbin”.
The thrash metal draws its roots in several other kinds: The Punk (Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Clean, Discharge), the Speed metal (Judas Priest), the Hard rock (Motörhead, Thin Lizzy) and the “biker American rock'n'roll” (Bob Seger, Lizzy Borden). It was very frequent at the beginning of the movement to also distinguish the influence of the progressive Rock, especially at Metallica which practices the changes of measurements. One can also quote, to a lesser extent, the alambiquées compositions of Megadeth, and Iced Earth groups it whose certain compositions last up to 16 minutes. However, the sound of other headlights groups such as Carbuncle and Slayer are much closer to the hardcore than of the progressive . One identifies his original of the kind to the " square of as" American thrash (" Big Furnace off Thrash" in English), made up of the groups Slayer, Megadeth, Carbuncle and Metallica, like with a similar grouping of German groups: Sodom, Kreator, Destruction and Tankard. It is however nothing more than one popular name, and there is no correspondence with a real association of some form that it is. That does not mean either that the groups not forming part of the square of ace are much less important, Testament and Exodus being for example other references of the kind.
History
Origins
The majority of the characteristics of the thrash, like the extensive use of the interval of second minor, skank-happy and rates/rhythms in double pedal of large case to the battery, the very fast dissonant solos popularized by Slayer and the rageuse voice, initially were tested in the Post-punk hardcore, for example in Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing of Discharge, the éponyme of Killing Joke (and its song The Wait ) and Troops off Tomorrow of The Exploited. In the scene Heavy Metal, groups such as Motörhead, for its speed (" Ace Off Spades"), and Judas Priest, for its fronts and its imagery " leather/nail/cartouchière" (" Exciter"), also largely influenced the thrash metal.
The first piece which one can really describe as thrash metal is a song of the group New Yorkean Overkill of 1981, named Unleash the Beast Within . Almost simultaneously, the group transitory California N Leather Charm (first training of the guitarist and singer of Metallica James Hetfield) written Hit the light , which it will take again later with Metallica.
It is fine 1981 which the first demonstration leaves the thrash: Red Ski , of Metal Church. The two following ones are of Metallica, Power Metal and No Life 'til Leather , respectively left in April and in July 1982.
The first album of thrash metal is the work of Metallica, Kill 'EM All , left in July 1983. The thrash metal develops in parallel in Europe but less quickly than with the the United States. The group Danish Artillery is among the very first groups of thrash European.
In Brazil, the thrash is also born with the group Overdose, which is really formed in 1983, and Sepultura, in 1984.
Rise
The thrash becomes truly popular in 1984. It tends then towards an increasingly heavy sound, more and more sinks, as in Bonded by Blood , of Exodus and the second album of Slayer, Hell Awaits (1985). The third group of the square of ace, Megadeth, carried out by the former guitarist of Metallica Dave Mustaine, leaves its first album this same year: Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good! . In Germany, the kind also develops with the demonstration In The Sign off Evil of Sodom (1984) and Endless Pain (1985), the first album of Kreator. A Brazilian scene thrash metal also appears with Bestial Devastation/Século XX (1985), the first album of Sepultura and Overdose, in association.
Apogee
It is in 1986 that the movement is its greater successes. Darkness Descend from Dark Angel, Eternal Devastation of Destruction, Pleasure to Kill of Kreator (which very strongly influenced the future Death metal), Peace Sells… Goal Who' S Buying? of Megadeth, Range Over of Nuclear Assault, Master Off Puppets of Metallica (Disc of platinum to the the United States), and Reign in Blood of Slayer are as many albums among most famous of the kind, which left in 1986.In 1987, Anthrax leaves the album Among The Living , which innovates by pieces more melody than the other headlights groups. The same year leaves the first album Testament, The Legacy .
Parallel to all these headlights groups of the thrash, some are different and a new metal style makes its appearance. Death and Possessed (and its guitarist virtuoso Larry Lalonde) gives rise to the Death Metal, the first album of the kind being Seven Churches in 1985. Certain groups mix also certain aspects of the Speed metal with the thrash, for example Megadeth, Helstar, Heathen and Testament.
At the end of the years 1980, the movement starts to be saturated by new groups but certain albums of this period remain nevertheless references: the third album of Sepultura, Beneath The Remains , Coma off Drunk of Kreator, Orange Agent of Sodom and Rust In Peace of Megadeth.
The June 20th 1989 sees appearing the video first of thrash on the screens of the music channel MTV, One of Metallica inspired by the novel Johnny is gone-T from there war and taking again extracts of the film adaptation.
The years 1990: the fall
The years 1990 see to take place an evolution in the sound thrash, the groups preferring to keep a sound closer to the roots losing in popularity. Thus, the near totals of the groups slow down the tempo, with more or less of success. Black Album of Metallica, Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia of Megadeth belongs to successes, like, to a lesser extent, Practice What You Preach of Testament, Divine Intervention of Slayer and Endorama of Kreator (album influenced by the Gothic Metal). The change of style becomes much more radical thereafter for Metallica which gives up the thrash metal for a kind close to the Blues in its albums Load and Reload . Megadeth follows a similar way with Cryptic Writings and Risk . Slayer is reorientated more towards the metalcore with a God Hates Custom very yelling All , and Will takes as a starting point a Power Metal such as practiced it Pantera with The Gathering , Demonic and Low . Metallica again radically changes style in St Anger into 2003 while being tested with the Néo metal.
Rebirth
In the years 2000, some groups turn over to a sound closer to that of the years 1980, as Megadeth with The World Needs has Hero (2001) or Slayer with Christ Illusion (2006). The scene thrash " pure" thus importance begins again nowadays, grace also to the groups which remained faithful to the roots like Sodom with its album éponyme (2006).
