Thorin II Ecu-of-Oak
In the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, Thorin II Ecu-of-Oak (in English Thorin II Oakenshield ) is a character of the Ground of the Medium. It is a Nain, wire of Thráin II and grandson of King Thrór.
Born into 2746 from the Third Age, Thorin was led in exile by Smaug into 2770, with the remainder of the surviving dwarves of the Solitary Montagne . With the battle of Azanulbizar in 2799, whereas it was only 53 years old (an young age for a dwarf) it enlisted in a powerful army of dwarves in Nanduhirion under the door Is Moria. Its shield was destroyed and it used a branch of tree to defend oneself, of this fact it gained the nickname of Ecu-of-Oak.
During the exile, when his/her father Thráin II died, Thorin became king under the name of Thorin II Ecu-of-Oak .
In Bilbo the Hobbit, it and twelve other dwarves returned visit to Bilbon Sacquet on the council of Gandalf in order to require of him to recover their treasure, with the hands of the dragon Smaug. This company crossed the North of the Ground of the Medium to join the Solitary Montagne, the old kingdom of the Nain S, occupied by the dragon. When this last was overcome by Bard, Thorin legitimately took again possession of the mountain and its treasures.
He wanted to keep for him the Arkenstone, which was worth an argument with Bilbo to him. A conflict between the two characters could be avoided thanks to an attack of goblin S and Warg S, causing the Bataille of the Five Armies (T.A. 2941) during which the dwarves linked their forces with those of the Elfe S, of the men of the town of Dale and of the large eagles.
During the Thorin battle was mortally wounded, but before dying it made peace with Bilbo by admitting bravery and the good character of which can make to proof the Hobbits. Its last words were “So more among us privileged food, helps it and the music on piled up gold, we would live in a merrier world. However, gladly badly liking, I must leave from now on. Good-bye” (original version: " Yew more off custom valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would Be has merrier world. Goal, sad gold merry, I must leave it now. Farewell. ").
Thorin used the blade Orcrist elf in these last combat. It precisely found it in a hiding place troll after having failed to be killed by those. It made use throughout the search of Erebor and was buried of it with it, like with Arkenstone, with its death.
In the cartoon the Hobbit of 1977, Hans Conreid lends her voice to him.
