He emigrates young person in South Carolina and acquires a plantation on banks of the river Santee. It is there that it will pass the remainder of its life.
One is unaware of the details of his formation, but it is probable that it received a good education. He intensively studies the plants in a radius of 80 km around at his place.
He forwards to his friend the botanist John Fraser (1750-1811) Latin a manuscript describing more than 1.000 species (including more than 200 news) and 435 kinds (including 32 new). Fraser then makes it appear under the title of Flora Caroliniana . It is the first local flora of North America using the binomial nomenclature linnéenne.
Fraser also receives the Herbier of Walter. This one is acquired by the Société linnéenne of London in 1849 then by the British Museum in 1863 in a state of advanced deterioration.
