Thomas Rhymer
Thomas Rhymer (also called Thomas Rhymer or Thomas Rymer ), of its true name Thomas Learmonth d' Erceldoune , is a Devin and a Scottish poet of the 13th century.
Thomas was born in Erceldoune (currently, Earlston), on the Scottish border. It with the reputation to be the author of many prophetic worms. Its life is known little about, but its name is mentioned in two Charte S of 1260 - 80 and of 1294, the last referring to “wire of Thomas de Ercildounson and to the heir to Thome Rymour de Ercildoun”.
The memory of Thomas survived of the Siècle S after its death; several imitateurs manufactured false “prophecies” of Thomas Rhymer, in order to promote the cause of Scottish independence. The reputation of its supernatural capacities even has, during a time, competed that of Merlin the Enchanter. He would have predicted many great events in the Scottish history, like the death of Alexandre III of Scotland.
There exists a Ballade Thomas Rhymer that the musicologists make go up until the 13th century. The topic of this song returns to the questions of temptation and the pleasures mortals. One also wrote, at the 14th century, a Romance of Thomas d' Erceldoune , accompanied by Prophétie S, which obviously must much with the Ballade.
One knows several Variante S of the history of Thomas Rhymer, which leaves the same basic topic very. They tell that Thomas would have embraced or have a sexual relationship with the queen of Elphame and that it is assembled with her (when it is not transported in another manner) with the kingdom of the Fée S. a version tells that she would have changed into a witch after the night that they had passed together, in punishment, but which she would have found her beautiful country of origin while approaching the castle, where her husband had lived. Thomas would be remained in a part in the castle until she says to him to turn over near her and it would be turned over in the world of the mortals, where it would then have realized that seven years (a significant number in the magic) had been passed. To Thomas, who would have asked him to be able to remember of it, the queen would have offered to become Harpiste or Prophète, and he would have chosen “prophet”. After a certain number of years, Thomas would be turned over to the kingdom of the fairies, from where it would never have returned.
The gift of Thomas of prophecy seems related to its poetic genius, although one cannot establish if Rhymer were its real family name or simply a nickname. The name of Thomas Rhymer often attached to Sir Tristrem , a version of the legend of Tristan. Some lines in the Chronique of Robert Mannyng must be at the origin of this association. However, Sir Tristrem is an adaptation of second half of the 12th century, allotted to the Anglo-Norman novelist Thomas of Great Britain, and it may be that both Thomas were confused.
