Thomas Mann (born the June 6th 1875 with Lübeck, deceased the August 12th 1955 with Zurich) is a German writer , prize winner of the Nobel Prize of literature in 1929.

Biography

He is the younger brother of Heinrich Mann and the son of a patrician family of tradesmen. In 1891, his/her father dies and the businesses are abandoned. The following year, he writes some texts in prose and of the articles for the magazine Der Frühlingssturm (“the Storm of spring”) which he Co-publishes. In 1894, not liking the school, it leaves the college and finds mother and brothers and sisters with Munich. There, he works for an insurance company, but he gives up this middle-class profession in 1895 to become free writer. He begins his most famous novel Buddenbrooks (appeared in 1901) during a stay in Italy (1896 - 1898) with his Heinrich brother, with Rome and in his neighborhoods. The February 11th 1905, it marries Katharina (Katia) Pringsheim (July 24th 1883, Feldafing close to Munich - April 25th 1980, Kilchberg close to Zurich), a grand-daughter of the feminist Hedwig Dohm. The following years, come in the world their children Erika, Klaus, Golo (makes Angelus Gottfried Thomas of them), Monika, Elisabeth and Michael.

In 1912, it publishes der Tod in Venedig (Death in Venice) after a voyage which it makes in this city.

In 1933, it emigrates in Suisse where it settles with Küsnacht, close to Zurich. After the takeover by the Nazis, it decides not to turn over more in Germany. In 1936, it loses German nationality. Knowing works of Sigmund Freud, he will say Hitler: “As this man must hate the Psychanalyse! ” In 1938, it lives with Princeton, the the United States then the following year with Pacific Palisades in California. In 1952, it turns over in Suisse and not in Germany although one spoke even at the time naming it like first President. Three years later, he dies.

Among the distinctions and rewards which it accepted, one can note the Nobel Prize of literature in 1929 and the Goethe-Preis of the towns of Francfort-sur-le-Main and Weimar in 1949. In 1954, it is made citizen of honor of his birthplace.
