Thomas Johann Seebeck (April 9th 1770 - December 10th 1831): German physicist who discovered the Seebeck effect in 1821.

Biography

Thomas Johann Seebeck was born in Reval in Eastern Prussia (today Tallinn, Estonia) in a German family of merchant. Graduate of medicine in 1802 at the university of Göttingen, it prefers to devote himself to the study of physics. In 1821, he discovers the Seebeck effect: a Potential difference appears with the junction of two materials when they are subjected to a Gradient of temperature. This effect is at the base of the generation of electricity by thermoelectric effect and of the temperature measurement by thermocouples.
