Thomas Ier of Savoy , born the May 27th 1178 with the castle of the Coal-scuttles with Aiguebelle, dead the March 8th 1233 with Moncalieri in Italy), was count de Savoie, of Aoste and Maurienne and lord of Piedmont of 1189 with 1233. He was the son of Humbert III the Happy, count de Savoie, of Aoste and Maurienne, and Beatrice de Mâcon.
Count de Savoie at eleven years, it had as a tutor Boniface Ier de Montferrat, who brought it in the alliance of the Gibelins. Major, it supported the emperor Frederic II against papacy: it accepted then the title of imperial vicar . It extended its fields until the Bugey, country of Vaud and with the Piedmont and took the title of lord of Piedmont . In 1232, it chooses Chambéry for capital. It could not preserve its territorial acquisitions, because it were divided between its sons and it is only in 1418 that its descendant Amédée VIII will manage to join together them again.
In May 1196, Thomas Ier married Marguerite (or Beatrice) Genevese, girl of Guillaume Ier de Genevois, count de Genevois and of Vaud, and Beatrice de Valpergue. They will have fifteen children:
