The Holométaboles are a type of insects sometimes called Endoptérygotes constitute a category of Insecte S, subclass of the Ptérygote S which is characterized by their metabolism. In this case the larva differs radically from the adult (caterpillar/butterfly, maggot/fly…). It is deprived of wings (endoptérygotes) and does nothing but grow without change in form. At the last larval stage, it is immobilized and protected in general (chrysalis, pupe…) ; it is the preparatory stage nymphal metamorphosis as an adult.

Of the complete metamorphosis S, and passes by various states:
- egg (motionless state),
- larva (active state), which differs much from the adults,
- pre-imaginal stage (motionless state),
- imago (active state).
