Thomas Fersen

Biography

Thomas Fersen was born the January 4th 1963 with Paris, with the private clinic of the Cornflowers, in the 11th district, of a mother nurse and a father bank clerk. It has two older sisters who have 2 and 4 years more than him.

It grows in Parisian suburbs, in the the Valley-of-Marne, but it is in his/her grandparents, close to Roanne, that Thomas makes his first discovered: that of the countryside and that of the music that his/her grandfather, also banking and musician at his lost hours, make him discover. His/her grandmother often walked with him to the Père Lachaise.

In 1969, the family leaves Sucy-in-Brie for the 20th district of Paris. Thomas joined then the elementary school of the street Julien-Lacroix. It is at the elementary school that he discovers the song by the means of the bawdy songs. Explanations of the interested one: " In certain sentences for example, “between the centres, direction willy”, this ellipse, it is extraordinary. From only one blow, one passes from the centres to the willy with the word “direction”, it walks: there is a connection which is done in the spirit. It is that which I try to do in my chansons".

He dreamed in front of the windows of the stores of music and its first guitar was offered to him by his/her mother (who did not believe too much in him).

As of fourteen years, rocked by the Anglo-Saxon music that he discovers at the time of some excursions in England, Thomas writes his first chansons." I remember the voyages to London for 230 F return ticket, smiles Thomas. We travelled by the bus with 23:00 One arrived at 7:00 Nothing was not still opened, one wandered in the streets and it was splendid… "

In 1978, the family moves in the 8th district and Thomas leaves the college Jacques Decour for the Condorcet college. He takes down his vat D (Natural science) in 1980 and founds a group of music " UU" (" because it was registered on the tickets of métro") then is registered in BTS of electronics. Thomas then founds its third group of music, Figure off Fun, according to a title of Birthday Party, the group of Nick Cave at the time (Track 6 of the album “Prayers one Fire”) and attends the Pink Bonbon at the same time as Indo-China, at the end of 81. " This punk period made me good, has postériorise Fersen. I was in the imitation of English, but that gave an opportunity to me to spend me a little, enough ludique."

Of 1984 with 1985 Thomas carries out his military service (which will inspire " surely later to him; Marie-of-guérites" …) In 1986, thanks to a friend ethnologist, it leaves this summer to Central America then to Cuba: truth Thomas Fersen was born in with the return from this voyage, seven years only before the Ball of the birds. It borrows the first name of Thomas from Thomas Boyd (Scottish football player that Thomas notices at the time of Mundial 86). His/her father proposes to him to take the name of Fersen thus referring to the lover of Marie-Antoinette, Axel de Fersen. Its name decides Thomas Fersen well (and not Thomasse).

In 1988 leaves its first 45 turns, “Your Jane hero” who does not meet an insane success. 1990 mark the exit of its second 45 turns, “people of the night”, and birth of his/her Juliette daughter. It leaves its first album, the Ball of the birds in 1993, which gives him an immediate recognition and is worth to him, in 1994, a Victoire of the music as a male Révélation . It is one of the first artists to join the label Tôt or late.

Fersen is an achieved poet, who enjoys to play with the language, using of words with double direction, richs rhyme, symbols and images drawn from the vegetable world (vegetables, fruits) and animal (birds and varied bestiary), to tell original stories or fables, to depict moments of the daily newspaper, impressions and feelings, or the dreams of ordinary people, theirs through and defects… Its serious and rocky voice of smoker gives a tone particular to its songs, with the variable musical style according to the albums (Rock, Folk - rock'n'roll or Jazz and Blues…).

It is on scene that Thomas embarks his public in completely extravagant environments, with its image. With his faithful friend guitarist Pierre Sangra, or Alexandre De Barcelona with the accordion and the keyboards, Christophe Cravero with the piano, Thomas surprise with each new spectacle. Its surjouée nonchalance, the universe of its texts, its completely shifted costumes and its madness contributes to create an environment of festival.
