Thomas Edmund Dewey (March 24th 1902 - March 16th 1971) is a American Politician, governor of the State of New York of 1943 to 1955. He was the republican candidate with the presidential elections of 1944 and 1948, qu ' he lost. He was the first candidate born at the 20th century.
It failed in 1938 being elected governor of New York, but succeeds in 1942 and was re-elected in 1946 and 1950. He was regarded as an honest and effective governor. He reduced the taxes, doubled the State aid for education, increased the wages of the civils servant of the State, and reduced the deficit of the State of more than 100 million dollars. He made vote a law which interdisit racial discrimination at the time of recruitment and promulgated the laws off creating the State University New York .
The celebrity of Thomas Dewey was caused by an anecdote at the time of the presidential election of 1948 vis-a-vis the president Harry Truman: the newspaper Chicago Daily Tribune prematurely titrated the night of the vote “ DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN ” (Dewey beat Truman). In fact, Truman had carried it in spite of a popularity which seemed declined. The irony wants that Dewey was the first candidate with presidential to have a team charged to collect the results of the votes.
At the time of this countryside, Dewey did not take any risk to benefit from the problems of Truman. It threaded flatnesses, like: “ You know that your future is still ahead off you ” (You know that your future is still in front of you). A leading article of the Louisville Courier-Newspaper summarized this countryside as follows:
(In the future, no candidate with presidential will be sufficiently inept so that its principal speeches can be summarized in these four historical sentences: agriculture is important. Our rivers are full of fish. You cannot be free without freedom. Our future is in front of us).
Of its side, Truman bound its adversary to Congress republican that it qualified of “ C-nothing Congress ” (the Congress which does not do anything), against which the president had battled during his mandate. Dewey was however not so preserving only the republican members of the federal assembly. For example, contrary to his competitor with the primary educations, the senator Robert Taft, Dewey were not an isolationist: at the beginning of the Cold war, it supported the Marshall plan, the assistance with the Greece, the recognition of the State of Israel and the airlift against the Blocus of Berlin.
In 1964, the legislative assembly of the state of New York officially baptized in her honor a Autoroute with toll connecting Buffalo to the town of New York, even if the name Thomas E. Dewey Thruway is little usually used.
