Thomas Dobrée

Thomas Dobrée (1810 - 1895) is a Nantes personality, rich collector at the origin of the palate Dobrée.

Presentation

Wire and grandson of Ship-owner S Nantes and promoters of the industry whale-boat with Nantes, but whose family Huguenot E originating in Normandy was established before with Guernesey since the 16th century, Thomas Dobrée is very young person with the head of an immense fortune. It gives up the family tradition of the trade and, become collector, it devotes 64 years of its life to the “research and the worship of the past”, acquiring more 10  000 works of Article.

In answer to its order of vast a " Romance house " , Purple-the-Duke proposes a Gothic castle to him. Dobrée will build finally itself the palate which bears its name with the successive assistance of the Nantes architects Simon, Boismen, Chenantais and Diberder. The shape of the building would be inspired by that of the Châsse of Saint Calmin, Limousin enamel of the 13th century, one of the jewels of the collection.

Thomas Dobrée will devote 100  000 gold francs (254  000  €) per annum during 34 years with the construction of this " folie" intended to be its residence and to accommodate its collections. He will never live there, the palate will be completed only after his death.

It is in 1894 that it bequeathed its collections to the general advice. The museum opened its doors in 1899.
