Thomas Cromwell

Thomas Cromwell (towards 1485 - July 28th 1540), Count d' Essex, was a politician English, adviser of the king Henri VIII of England. He is one of the main actors of the Réforme in England.

Thomas Cromwell was born in a modest milieu, towards 1485, with Putney close to London. His/her father Walter Cromwell so known under the name of Smyth (1463 - 1510) was brewer, commercial Forgeron or and was known for his permanent intoxication and his illegal activities.

He leaves England in his youth, surely following an argument with his father, and travels in Europe. He leaves for the Italy where he engages like soldier in the French army and fights at the time of the battles of Garigliano (December 21st 1503).

Following the French defeat, he escapes from the battle field for Florence. There, it is put at the service of Francesco Frescobaldi, member of one of the rich person families of merchants of the city.

During several years, Cromwell works for the commercial interests of Frescobaldi, travelling to Pisa, Venice and finally with the Netherlands, where it enters, towards 1508, with the service of English traders. It is significant that its stay in Venice enabled him to meet the traditional enemies of papacy, who had fought against Jules II and the Ligue of Cambric.

It in particular contributed in the business of the Dissolution of the monasteries. As much of others, Cromwell will be victim of the cruelty of end of reign of Henri VIII and will die decapitated in 1540.
