Thomas Coutrot

Thomas Coutrot is a economist and a statistician French born in 1956. Chief of the department “work conditions and health” with the DARES with the Employment and Ministry of Labor, it is also one of the organizers of the Réseau of alarm on the inequalities. Militant altermondialist, it takes part in the Fondation Copernic and Attac of which he is member of the Scientific advice.

Course

Graduate of the ENSAE, it started in 1982 his career in the Center of study of the incomes and costs (CERC). From 1988 to 1990, he was professor at the university of Brasilia. On its return in France, it was engaged with the DARES where it took the direction of the department “work conditions and industrial relationships” (since 2003 department “work conditions and health”). In 1997, it supports with the Université Paris I a thesis in economic scenes based in its empirical part on the data of the investigation ANSWER (Industrial relationships and negotiations of company) which it conceived for the DARES. It leads statistical surveys and studies the innovations as regards organization of work and human stock management and, more recently, in the field of health at the work. Author of the néo-liberal Company, new capitalist Utopia? (1998), of Critical of the organization of work (2000, republished in 2002) then Democracy against capitalism (2005), it directs its research towards the “social responsibility of the companies” and, more generally, on the topic of “the economic democracy”.

Militant engagement

Member of the LCR of 1974 with 1988, Thomas Coutrot since then did not adhere more to an political organization. Of 1996 with 1998 it contributed to the launching and the animation of “the Call of the economists to leave the doctrinaire approach”. Member since 1996 of the Network of alarm on the inequalities (or SPOKE), it contributed to the creation of his Barometer of poverty and the inequalities in France, IBP 40 (contraction of the reverse of initials GDP and the CAC40). He takes part in his actualization and the developments associated with construction and animation with his Internet site of which he is member of the Editorial board since his launching. Thomas Coutrot is member since 1998 Scientific advice of association altermondialist ATTAC.
