Thomas Conway
Thomas Conway (1734 - 1800) was a French soldier originating in Ireland which was useful like general Major in the American army at the time of the Guerre of independence of the United States of America.
Conway was born in Ireland the February 27th 1734, but was educated in France. With 20 years of experience in the French Army, it arrived at the rank of Colonel, then was voluntary in front of the Congress to return to the service of the American cause in 1777. Introduced by Silas Deane, the Congress named it like Brigadier general the May 13rd, and sent it to George Washington.
Conway orders the principal Brigade of the American right wing at the time of the Bataille of Germantown, and was precisely congratulated for its actions. However, Washington was opposed to its promotion with the rank of general major.
The condescending attitude of Conway leads to the continual confrontation between the men. “ ambitious man and dangerous ” known as Fayette. It was involved in intrigues the purpose of which were to oppose Gates and Lee to Washington, and justified in these businesses the bad one opinion that its general had of him.
The American Congress however indicates Conway as major general in December 1777, and made of him a General inspector of the army.
Its criticism of Washington was employed politically, its name was employed to describe this combat which is known under the name of Cabale of Conway. Its role had been minor, but it lost its rank. It tried a stratagem which had functioned before its promotion, and subjected its resignation to the congress in March 1778. This time, it is accepted, and it is forced to leave the army.
John Cadwalader faces it in a duel July 22nd 1778. Survivor, it writes excuses in Washington and turns over to France.
Conway returned then in the French Army and was used as governor of the French colonies in India. In 1793, it fought at the side of the royalist forces, against the French revolution, in the South of France. Their defeat has constrained it to be exiled of its country of adoption. It returned in Ireland and remained there until its death in 1800.
