Biography
Scintillating and authoritative personality, it was the first of the great line of leaders English (Boult, Barbirolli, Marriner, Davis, Gardiner, Rattle…). He is especially appreciated today for his clear and dynamic readings of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Hector Berlioz and Mili Balakirev, but he state also a champion of Jean Sibelius and Ethel Smyth. Its version réorchestrée of the Messiah of Georg Friedrich Haendel, now anachronistic, also testifies it to its legendary strength.
