Thistle of Spain

The thistle of Spain , or scolyme of Spain , is a bi-annual Plante with sheets and stems thorny, of the family of the Astéracées, enough commune in ground dry in the area the Mediterranean.

Scientific name: Scolymus hispanicus L., family of the Astéracées (Made up).

Common noun: thistle of Spain, cardoon of Spain, yellow spine, cardousse. of: Goldwurzel, in: golden delicious thistle, be: cardillo, it: cardo scolimo .

Description

It is a bi-annual plant, being able to reach from 30 to 80 cm in height. The principal root of the swivelling type is developed enough.

The very thorny sheets, with strong white veins, are divided into finished lobes each one by a strong spine. The stems carry thorny wings in prolongation of the sheets.

The yellow flowerheads of flowers appear with the armpit of the sheets from July to September-October. They are surrounded by three bractées rather similar to the sheets. The involucre itself is composed of bractées narrow finished at a peak.

The fruits, of the Akène S, are prolonged by four silks.

Distribution

This species is originating mainly in the edges of the Mediterranean: North Africa, the Morocco to the Egypt, southernmost Europe of the Portugal to the Greece, Europe orinetale (Romania, Ukraine), Occidental Asia, of Cyprus and the Turkey until the Iran.

In France, one especially finds it in the Mediterranean region and a little in South-west.

It was naturalized in many countries, including in America. With the the United States, she is regarded as plants invading.

Use

The plant which contains Inuline is edible: one can consume the salad starts-up and the roots cooked in ragout.

It is also a Mauvaise grass.
