Third Anglo-Dutch War

The Third War Anglo-Dutch was an armed conflict between the Republic of the seven United Provinces and the England between 1672 and 1674 subjacent with the Guerre of Holland that Louis XIV had engaged in 1672 and who finished only in 1678.

Causes

After drive out-crossed War of Devolution (1667 - 1668), having caused the Triple Alliance between the United Provinces, England and the Sweden, Louis XIV had approached the English Crown considerably. In 1670, Charles II of England and Louis XIV signed the Traité of Dover, treated secret by which England would join France in imminent the Guerre of Holland in exchange of the towns of Rotterdam and Amsterdam which would return to the English Crown at the time of the division handle bellum . In accordance with this agreement, England declared the war with the Republic directed by Johan de Witt preceded by France in 1672. This war was as instigated by sharp humiliation as Charles II had felt at the time of the English defeat in the Second war anglo-Dutchwoman.

Engagements

The German principalities of Cologne and Münster united with the Franco-English coalition and the French terrestrial troops progressed quickly until the Netherlanders prevented some while flooding voluntarily of great portions of the country by forcing the dams. The history Dutchwoman appointed year 1672 like that of the disasters.

The republican government of Jan de Witt fell under the popular discontent and this last was assassinated by a jacquerie orangist what made it possible Guillaume III of Orange-Nassau (which went later on and ironically to become the king of England) to reach the stathoudérat and to put forward itself as leader of the armies Dutchwomen. England had supported the orangists with the intention besides that the accession with the head of the army of his/her brother-in-law was going to give the Republic in protectorate to the English Crown. In parallel, Louis XIV also manigançait him to fall the Treaty of Dover by deferring the invasion of the Dutch big cities constantly to force the Netherlanders to pour a tribute of war of 16 million guilders. These intrigues did nothing but accentuate the resistance of the Netherlanders and made it possible Guillaume III of Orange to consolidate its situation.

The support that the British navy was to bring to the French troops revealed inadequate. Michiel de Ruyter demolished its opponents with the battles of Solebay in 1672, with the battles of Schooneveld and finally with the of Texel in 1673 battles. Moreover, the United Provinces began again into 1673 the New-Country-Low with the English, lost nine years earlier. To course of funds, Charles II turned to the Parlement to continue the war. This last refused to him, obliging England to sign the Traité of Westminster the February 19th 1674.

Treaty of Westminster

In this treaty which put a term at the Third war anglo-Dutchwoman, the two parties officialized the situation de facto outstanding since 1664 as for the fate of the Guyana and the New-Country-Low. Part of the first had passed to the hands of the Netherlanders at the time of the Second war anglo-Dutchwoman whereas the New-Countries-Low (famous Province off New York by the English in 1664) had become English.

The War of Holland against France went, it, perdurer until 1678.
