In the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, Elected Thingol (in Quenya Elwë Singollo ) or simply Thingol (“gray coat” in Sindarin) is one of the Elfes which woke up with Cuiviénen. With Ingwë and Finwë, it is one of the ambassadors of the Elves in Valinor.

On its return, it takes the head of the tribe of the Teleri with his brother Olwë to lead them to Valinor. During the way, it meets Melian, a Maia and, envoûté by it, there remain long years at its sides in the wood of Nan Elmoth. When it comes out from it, it takes the name of Elected official Thingol and becomes the king of all the Elves of Beleriand, the Sindar (or Gray Elves). It is the only one of Sindar which is counted among the Calaquendi, because it saw the light of the Two Trees at the time of sound short stay in Valinor.

With the return of Ground the Noldor exiled of the Medium, he concedes the parts to them of his kingdom little or not populated: in fact, all Beleriand except Doriath, the personal kingdom of Thingol, and Falas. It is him which spoke with his/her relative Finrod about the Cavernes about Narog or the latter undertaken the construction of Nargothrond. Ending up learning the truth about the return from Noldor, and massacres it his/her parents telerins with Alqualondë, it decides to prohibit the Quenya in its kingdom and to return the obligatory Sindarin, edict to which Noldor must conform (even if they continue to use the quenya between them). The relations between Noldor and Sindar de Doriath remain fresh.

It have a girl, Lúthien, with which he prohibits to marry human the Beren, making fun of him of asking him to bring back a Silmaril of the crown of Morgoth in exchange of the hand of his/her daughter. Against any waiting, he manages to achieve this exploit and Thingol thus enables him to marry his/her daughter in exchange of Silmaril, which was to finally precipitate the fall of Doriath. A few years later, it accommodates Túrin, wire of Húrin, and adopts it. The young man achieves exploits in the fight at the borders of Doriath, and it binds to it friendship with Beleg Cúthalion. However, the young man flees after having killed an adviser of Thingol, Saeros, by accident, and despite everything its research, Thingol never revives it.

The history of died of Thingol rather confused or is told in a hasty way in the texts of Tolkien. If one believes of it the version of the Silmarillion , he perishes treacherously with the hand of dwarf blacksmiths which he had charged with crimping Silmaril in the middle of the Nauglamír that Húrin Thalion had brought Nargothrond to him. Filled with wonder by the beauty at Silmaril, the Dwarves conceive the desire to keep it for them. King Thingol their fact shame and orders to them to leave Doriath. The Dwarves kill the king and steal Nauglamìr but the desperate Elves of the disappearance of their King pursued the murderers and only two escaped from it. This murder remains one of the main reasons of thousand-year-old animosity between the Elves and the Dwarves at the time of the Guerre of the Ring.

After having made the honors funeral with her husband, his wife, Melian Maia, free without word to say the Earth of the Medium and turns over to Valinor. The death of Thingol precedes by little the fall of Doriath, because with the departure of Melian the ring disappears which had protected Doriath during long years, and nothing is opposed to the revenge on the Dwarves. Its grandson Dior Eluchil tries, a few years later, to make reappear his ashes the kingdom of Doriath.

The sword of Thingol has as a name Aranrúth (“anger of the king”). She survives the fall of Doriath and belonged to the treasure of the kings of Númenor, to disappear during the immersion of this island.
