Thierry Desmarest

Thierry Desmarest , born the December 18th 1945 with Paris, is a head of French undertaking, currently Chairman and managing director and President of the Executive committee of the group Total SA.

In 1966, it is graduate Polytechnic school, then engineer of the body of the Mines in 1970.

Its career begins in the mines in New Caledonia, then with the ministry for industry and that of the economy.

It enters to Total in 1981. He exerts various functions within subsidiary companies of the group then within the Upstream, with the Exploration-Production. In 1989, he becomes the managing director of the Exploration-Production and seat at the executive committee of Total. In 1995 it is named chairman and managing director of Total. There will carry out fusions with Petrofina (TotalFina in 1999) then with Elf (TotalFinaElf in 2000), remaining chairman of the new entities and is since May 6th 2003 the chairman and managing director of the Total group.

It indicated Christophe de Margerie (currently managing director of the branch Exploration-Production of the group) like successor with the function of managing director of the group mid-February 2007, itself preserving its president's functions of the board of directors of Total.
