Thibault

Thibault is a vast Romance cycle esque of Roger Martin of Gard writes between 1920 and 1937.

It is composed of the following parts:

  • the gray Book (1922)
  • the Penitentiary (1922)
  • the Beautiful Season (1923)
  • the Consultation (1928)
  • Sorellina (1928)
  • the Death of the father (1929)
  • the Summer 1914 (1935-1936)
  • Epilog (1937)

This novel being held beginning of the 20th century until the end of the Great War tells the history of two families of the French middle-class:

  • Thibault are the main subject of the book. The father, Oscar Thibault is a despot who treats his children hard, but who likes them. Antoine and Jacques Thibault are his sons, the brothers “that all opposes”, from which the ages are different nine years. Antoine is doctor, Jacques is militant a Socialiste. This family is Catholique.

  • Fontanin are the members of a family Protestante: Jerome de Fontanin, who left the marital home, is the husband of Therese de Fontanin who only deals with her two children Daniel and Jenny.

The novel begins at the time of a running away of Jacques and Daniel.
