Thiaroye

Thiaroye (or Tiaroye ) is a city of the Senegal, located in the suburbs of Dakar, in the south of the Presqu'île of Cape Verde, between Pikine and Rufisque.

Actually, since the reform of 1996, several communes carry this name, Thiaroye-Station , Thiaroye-on-Sea and Thiaroye-Kao (or Djiddah Thiaroye Kao).

History

The village of Thiaroye was founded towards 1800.

The most known episode of the history of Thiaroye is that of a massacre. End 1944 of the African soldiers originating in various countries - Senegalese Riflemen in particular - having taken part in the release of France whereas the Second world war is not finished yet, are gathered in a camp of transit in Thiaroye. They wait to be demobilized and to touch their balance, but are prone to the ill treatments and racist vexations. The right remuneration of their services being refused them, they are mutinent and on November 30th they take as an hostage a French general whom they release shortly after. December 1st, the French Army gives the attack to the making camp of many victims.

The localities closest to Thiaroye-Station are Pikini-Bougou, Nimzat, Yeumbeul, Thiaroye Kao, Diaksaw and Darou Rahmane.

The localities closest to Thiaroye-on-Sea (as the crow flies) are Beautiful-Air, Hann-Mountain, Pikine, Guinaw-Rails, Tivaouane, Diammagueun, Mbaw Gou Ndaw and Gorée.

The localities closest to Thiaroye-Kao are Tiaroye-Station, Yeumbeul, Boun and Darou Rahmane.

Population

At the time of the census of 2002 the population of Thiaroye-Station rose with 21.873 inhabitants, that of Thiaroye-on-Sea with 36.602, that of Thiaroye-Kao with 90.586.

In 2007, according to the official estimates, these communes would respectively count 24.867,41 612 and 102.985 people.

Economic activities

Many inhabitants work in Dakar.

Craft industry and trade constitute the local main activities. The living conditions are often rather difficult, in particular for the young people without employment.

Coastal town close to the capital, Thiaroye shelters the Research center oceanographical of Dakar-Thiaroye (CRODT).
