Synopsis
The '' Enterprise '' arrives on the planet M-113 to provide supply and to proceed to medical examinations of routine to Doctor Robert Crater and his wife Nancy, with whom Dr. Leonard McCoy had a connection in the past. M-113 has become the hearth of Craters for five years, where during this time, they undertook research Archéologique S on the ruins of planet.
Kirk, McCoy and Darnell a man of safety téléportent himself on planet. They meet Dr. Crater and Nancy Crater. However each member of the team of exploration sees a different woman. McCoy is said astonished to see that it changed only little since the last time that he saw it, 12 years ago. Darnell sees him, a completely different woman, a fair young woman similar to somebody whom he known on planet of the pleasures of Wrigley. Kirk sees him, a woman similar to that of Mac Coy, but definitely older.
Nancy, is actually a creature Métamorphe, the surviving last of M-113 and which can literally take the appearance of all those that it meets. The creature can apparently hypnotize its victims, before killing them, by absorbing all the salt contained in their body, of which it has a vital need. However the planet does not have any more salt. The remainder of its race disappeared following this deficiency. It is the only surviving one, thanks to a symbiotic relation with Dr. Crater who provided the creature of his vital salt and in return the creature provided to the Doctor a company… to replace his wife that the creature had assassinated, to nourish itself.
Wandering on board Enterprise, the creature starts to kill out of the team members by taking the shape of a person inspiring confidence with the future victim. At the end of the day, the creature kills Crater and is transformed again into Nancy, ready to kill McCoy. Kirk and Spock having discovered the secrecy of Crater, are ruent towards the districts of McCoy and try to convince it that it is not a question of true Nancy. Kirk is then attacked. He manages to kill the creature and thus saves the life of his friend and that of Enterprise.

Mc Coy: “Another error of my share… ”
Kirk: “It is a mystery and I do not like the mysteries, that gives me badly with the belly, and I crowned one of them in this moment. ”
This episode approaches the limits of what one can do, include/understand and forgive in situation of survival like human brittlenesses vis-a-vis the traps of appearance and the desire .
The Man Trap (literally the trap with man ), although it was the fifth episode by order of turning, had the happy privilege to be the first episode of Star Trek ever diffused on television, on September 8th, 1966. The scenario was finalized on June 16th, 1966. The script written by George Clayton Johnson indicates some resemblances to one of its preceding work for the Fourth Dimension (: Twilight Zone ), an episode called The Furnace Off Custom Are Dying , later worked again by Rod Sterling and diffused on January 1st, 1960. The history implied a person who could transform herself into all that it wished.
The NBC in the beginning had planned to begin Star Trek on September 15th, 1966 with the pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before . Little time before the beginning of the season with the autumn 1966, the network decided to early diffuse a special Avant-première of the series one week. It is believed that The Man Trap was initially selected because it offered the best seen several of the main characters (for example, the past of McCoy, the planet of origin of Spock, interest of Sulu for botany) that any other of the episodes filmed at this time (or, with more skepticism: it was selected because it was the “cerebral” episode less, with a conventional suspense implying dreadful assassinations and drives out with the monster).

The Man Trap ( literally the trap with man ), although it was the fifth episode by order of turning, had the happy privilege to be the first episode Star Trek ever diffused on television, the September 8th, 1966 . The first jet of the scenario was complete later the June 13rd, 1966 for a returned finalized version three days. The script written by George Clayton Johnson indicates some resemblances to one of its preceding work for the " Twilight Zone" an episode called " The Furnace Off Custom Are Dying" , later worked again by Rod Sterling and diffused the January 1st, 1960. The history implied a person who could transform herself into all that it wished. The episode had as an actor, Harry Towes (Reger in " The Return off the Archons " ) and the music was signed Jerry Goldsmith. As usual being for the first diffused episode, certain details of the generic credit were changed. Thus " create by " appears for Gene Roddenberry and the " starring" disappears with the top from the name from William Shatner. Always in the history of the big firsts. The Man Trap had the privilege to be the first novelized episode, therefore the first Star Trek novel, written by James Blish and appeared with the editions Bantam Books in January 1967, under the title " The Unreal McCoy ". One of the aspects of the episodes of the first season, it is that the crew is not only one silhouette surveying the corridors. One often see them occupying in work of maintenance, checking instruments and so on. This is obvious in " The Man Trap " and " Charlie X " in particular. Minor members of the crew devote themselves to usual conversations and gives the feeling which the vessel is a true community. For example, Uhura asking Bobby to come to repair its squeaking door, or when two team-members admire Janice Rand. All these small details of the life of the every day helped to make credible the unit and created an obvious complicity with the spectator. Another aspects of these first episodes, the sound effects of the footbridge remained unchanged since the two pilot episodes. They will remain it until free Gene Roddenberry its role of producer. One will note also the lack of appropriations to the final credits of certain actors who however have dialogs in the episode. It was rather usual in the series of the Sixties. It will be also noted that for the first season, the credit of the realizers and the scenario writers appear only in credits of end. the costume which the crewman Barnhart carries has a resemblance to the costume of radiations of an episode of " Outer Limits" , " The Production and Decay off Strange Particles" with in high-speed motorboat Leonard Nimoy. This is one of the many examples of loans of accessories of " Outer Limits" for Star Trek, in particular creatures of the artist make-up man Janos Prohaska. On the occasion, Prohaska modified its creatures to make of them monsters for the zoo of Talos IV ( " The Cage " ) or of course, Horta of " The Devil in the Dark " . the creature vampire of M-113 is a creation of Wah Chang, an artist Hawaien make-up man. The costume is carried by a woman Sharon Gimpel. The actress was frustrated enough by learning that one would not see it at all with the screen. Already very small, Sharon Gimpel lost several kilos while sweating in this unpleasantly hot costume. Besides the creature vampire of M-113 will remake an appearance amusing like ornament in the living room of Trelane ( " The Squire off Gothos " ).
