Theux

Theux (in Walloon Teu ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Liege.

She is also regarded as being the Walloon capital of crayfish. One finds besides there an mini-exposure visible with the public library, street of Hoëgne.

History

There were careers of black marble exploited until the 19th century.

At the time of the Revolution inhabitant of Li2ege, the delegates of the five banns of the Marquisat de Franchimont met August 26th 1789 with the January 23rd 1791, with Polleur initially, then in Theux and then in Spa: in 25 meetings, Franchimontois proclaimed a Declaration of the Human rights and the Citizen (September 16th 1789), more radical than that which France adopted then.

Theux

  • the center of Theux presents a whole of houses and a town hall of 17th and 18th centuries with to the center, the perron, symbol of freedoms.

  • the Château of Franchimont from which left 600 valorous which was massacred at the time of the seat of the troops of Charles Bold the which threatened Liege, the night of the 29 with the October 30th 1468. The castle in ruins was the subject of an exemplary restoration. Every two years, is held a moyenâgeuse fair there. It was before called Frank-Fair and was the pionnière of the kind in Belgium. The fair exists since 1977.

  • the church of Theux, a Romance church-market (the three naves are equal height), the only one between the Loire and the Rhine. Its ceiling painted at the 17th century was restored in the Années 1990. As of XIIIe century is built a tower of defense ajouxtée with the church. She testifies to the defensive role that the church played then at that time. Besides there would exist nothing any more but two turns of defense of this type in Belgium: this one and that of the church of Bastogne.

  • the January 4th 1997, an explosion due to a gas leak, the entry of Theux, close to bank ING (then BBL) caused the destruction of several buildings and the death of two volunteer firemen crushed between a car projected by the shock wave and the bank located opposite. For a few years a commemorative plaque has honoured their work.
