Thetford Mines
Thetford Mines , is a Ville Quebec located in the regional Municipalité of county of Asbestos and the area of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains. Its population in 2005 was established with: 26 861 inhabitants.
Thetford Mines is located at approximately 100 km in the south-west of the town of Quebec and at équidistance in the North-East of Sherbrooke. The city is crossed by the Rivière Bécancour.
Thetford Mines was founded in 1876, after the discovery of a layer éponyme of Amiante (more precisely Chrysotile) by Joseph Fecteau. Initially known under the name of Kingsville, it was famous Thetford Mines in 1905.
French-speaking with 94%, its toponym of Thetford Mines is discussed because of its English formulation.
Today, with the consequences of the banishment of asbestos by several countries, several institutions of the area of asbestos try to erase the reference to this product by changing their name. For example, the College of the area of Asbestos changed its name for the Cégep de Thetford, the School commission of Asbestos for the School commission of the Appalachian Mountains and the Hospital of the area of Asbestos for the Health center and social services of the area of Thetford. However, these name changes divide the population. Moreover, several companies, of which many mines, closed their doors in the area because of the Boycott of the Amiante. The population even decreased during several years. Today, one notes a veillissement population obvious.
Thetford Mines amalgamated with River-White on December 14th, 1994, and since the municipal fusions in Quebec, on October 17th, 2001, Thetford Mines gathers the municipality of Pontbriand, the municipality of the village of Robertsonville, the municipality of the canton of Thetford-Part-South as well as the towns of Black Lake and of course, Thetford Mines.
Being more the big city of the area of asbestos, the town of Thetford Mines gathers on its territory various institutions of public services such as the general hospital and Cégep de Thetford.
The city is the place of several cultural activities as the Festival Promotuel of the Changing and equips it with hockey local, the Isothermic, which evolves/moves in LNAH.
Removal of the St-Maurice district
Of 1970 with 1972, a whole district of the city was literally moved house by house. The objective being to leave the free site for future mining, as to move away the population from the sites where one used Explosif S. Certains buildings, of which the splendid Saint-Maurice church, were not moved.Today, several say that the removal was useless, since it there forever have use of the ground for mining. Moreover, several citizens were disturbed by the way in which the district was refitted, since the dwellings were gathered according to their style, thus developing esthetics with the detriment of the human aspect.
Characteristic
To Thetford Mines, the names of the streets do not correspond to their real orientation. Rather, they indicate the reverse of it. Thus, the North-South directed streets are désigées by the terms “is” and “western”, and vice versa.
