Thermal baths of the Fighters

The thermal baths of the Fighters to Saint-Romain-in-Gall, discovered into 1991 belong to a whole of a surface of eight hectares which comprises an esplanade of five hectares bordered in the East, with dimensions one of the river, gantry of the Rhone, in the west of the thermal baths of the palate of mirroir and in the north of the western hemicycle, northern gantry and thermal baths of the Fighters. The presence of this monumental whole on Right Bank shows that the town of Gallo-Roman Vienna extended on two banks from the river.

History

They were built during the 1st century towards 65, were transformed at the 2nd century and were given up at the 3rd century.

The department became owner of the site in 1970 and during work of restoration and creation of a museum, the thermal baths of the Fighters were updated.

Buildings

Overall plan

The buildings extend on 3500m ².

The court of entry, in the south, overhangs the esplanade and has a 37 meters length rectangular picine.

A semicircular gallery surrounded the court giving on the esplanade and the entry was done by in its medium.

The parts were distributed in a symmetrical way starting from the square hall of entry.

First thermal baths

Two frigidaria (cold rooms) with picine frame the entry and give directly in the tepidarium (tepid room) of 170 m ² located at the north of the entry. It gives in the caldarium (hot room). The frigidaria and the caldarium are provided with apses east coasts and West.

Thermal baths at the 3rd century

The access since the esplanade is done by two staircases which prolong the gallery and the picine is reduced.

The entry and both frigidaria are joined together, equipped with corridors joining the caldari, the apses are removed and two picines rectangular built on their site. The tepidarium is not modified, but in caldarium the apses are replaced by two rectangular baths.

Latrines public are built in the western part with direct access since outside.

Decorations

The latrines public are decorated murals presenting of the sportsmen: fighters, pugilists, discobole, a trainer or referee.

Mosaics present in octagonal medallions of the sportsmen rewarded for a palm or a cut in the shape of vase.

Circuit of water

Their construction in 65 bar the street of the thermal baths and destroyed the collector located under its roadway. The circuit of water must be remade.
