Concepts philosophical and social
In spite of the depravity which it depicts, this work has a certain philosophical merit in its fundamental concepts. Discussions between the characters on the philosophical questions alternate with the sections more obscenes of the novel. Not only this novel draws the attention to the sexual repression of the women at the time of the Lumières, but also to the exploitation of sexuality by the religious authority.
