Therese Humbert

The name of Therese Humbert (1856 - 1918) is associated with the famous business of the heritage Crawford, the swindle of the century which shook the political world and financier at the end of the 19th century.

Therese Daurignac was born from a country family with Aussonne in 1856. She marries in 1878 with Beauzelle Frederic Humbert, wire of Gustave Humbert, mayor of Toulouse which will become Minister for Justice in the 2nd Government of Charles de Freycinet in 1882.

In 1879 it claims to have received from Robert Henry Crawford, American millionaire, part of its heritage.

With this history, Humbert secured enormous loans by using supposed the heritage like guarantee. They move in with Paris, Avenue of the Large army. They buy the castle of the Spring tides with Vosves (Dammarie-the-Lily). This swindle successful to last a score of years until a judge decides to do to open the famous safe where was supposed to be the documents proving the heritage. The trunk contained only one brick and a part of a penny.

Humbert had already fled the country, but they were stopped with Madrid in December 1902. Therese Humbert, who had like defender Fernand Labori, was considered and condemned to five years of forced labors like her Frederic husband. His/her two brothers, who had disguised themselves as Crawford nephews, were condemned to two and three years each one.

With its release of prison, she emigrated towards the the United States. She died with Chicago in 1918.
