Theory of the planned behavior

The Théorie of the Behavior Planned (TCP) was proposed by Icek Ajzen (sometimes written " Aizen") and Fishbein like an improvement of the Theory of the reasoned action.

The TCP aims to explain or inflect the behaviors starting from questions like their bond with the attitudes, the feeling of car-effectiveness and the social norms.

She postulates that the human behavior, to be effective, must initially be decided/planned, from where the name of theory of the behavior planned . Moreover to be decided, three types of factors are necessary:

  1. Of the judgments on the desirablity of the behavior and its consequences ( attitudes compared to the behavior).
  2. Of the considerations on the influence and the opinion of the close relations on the behavior (the Social norms).
  3. Of the beliefs on the capacity of the subject to make a success of the behavior ( Car-effectiveness).

Fields of application

The theory of the planned behavior is an integrating theory applicable to a very large variety of situations: school abandonment, Absenteeism with work, port of the condom, behaviors of consumption, Road safety, stop of the tobacco…

For example for the stop of the tobacco, one will study successively:

  1. the attitude with respect to the tobacco (cancer, teeth yellow, impotence,…),
  2. the influence of the close relations of the smoker (family, children,…),
  3. the Car-effectiveness (“if I want, I am able to stop”).

According to the TCP, it is on these three factors that it is necessary to act concomitantly.
