The theory M is a theory worked out by Edward Witten the purpose of which is to unify the five theories of the cords.
From a quantum point of view, the fundamental object of this theory should be a Brane (generalization with NR dimensions of the Concept of Membrane) and not a cord, i.e. an object whose Volume of universe is wide in two dimensions of space and a dimension of time whereas the volume of universe of a cord is wide in a dimension of space and one of time. By compactification of the membrane around additional dimension previously evoked, one finds the fundamental cord of theory IIA. Unfortunately, contrary to the theory of the cords in which the action of Nambu-Goto can be quantified thanks to the presence of the Symétrie conforms, the similar theory in the case of the membrane does not have this symmetry, which makes the analysis direct much more difficult and up to now unfinished.
