Theophilus Bra
Theophilus Bra (° the June 23rd 1797 with Douai - † in 1863) is a sculptor of the romantic time .
Theophilus Bra is resulting from a family of artists wood-carvers since four generations. He made his artistic studies with Paris. Its sculptures are very numerous, one finds them in various churches of Paris, with the museum of Versailles, Lille, Valencian… It accepted important official orders under the Restauration and the Monarchie of July (Église of the Madeleine, Palais of Louvre and Triumphal arch, Versailles, statues of churches, marbles and plasters with the museum of Chartreuse with Douai…).
In 1818 receives a second Prix of Rome
Theophilus Bra was made Franc-Maçon in 1824 with the Perfect union of Douai. He belonged to the cabins of Paris, Lille and Douai between 1825 and 1840.
Exact contemporary of Eugene Delacroix, Bra strongly took part of the romantic time by his intransigent and enlightened personality and his fantastic inspiration which evokes the inhabited universes of Goya, William Blake or Victor Hugo.
He bequeathed funds important of 45.000 layers and 10.000 drawings comprising of the texts to the museum of Chartreuse of Douai which was the subject of exposures to the the United States and in France.
