Theodore de Bry

Theodore de Bry , born with Liege in 1528 and died in Frankfurt the March 27th 1598, is a draftsman, engraver and editor of origin inhabitant of Li2ege. It owes its celebrity with her picturesque descriptions of the first forwardings européeennes in Americas, which it publishes in Frankfurt in the collection known as of the Grands Voyages .

Its first professor was most probably his own father, the goldsmith Thiry de Bry the young person. Why did it leave Liege for Strasbourg? He would have been convinced of heresy and outlaw, and its goods would have been confiscated. It is thought however that it was already installed in Strasbourg in 1560. Strasbourg prosperous, is then acquired with Protestantism. The city was acquired a great artistic fame by accommodating many people fleeing persecutions, which make of Strasbourg a flourishing city in goldsmithery and engraving. Theodore founds his hearth there, marries in Strasbourg Catherine Esslinger.

He remains with London between 1587 and 1588, before settling definitively in Frankfurt, from which he asks to become middle-class. He dies there in 1598, at the 70 years age.
