Theodore Pein

Louis Auguste Theodore Pein was a French soldier, born and died in Châlons-sur-Marne (May 13rd, 1810 - January 13rd, 1891).
Biography
Volunteer in 1832, it gradually climbed the levels of the military hierarchy to become officer.It is with the rank of Capitaine that it arrives in Algérie in 1840 to take part in the conquest then in the “Pacification” of the country following the resumption of the engagements in 1839 by the troops of Abd El-Kader.
Within the Army of Africa, it mutiplie feats of arms. In 1849, he manages to come to end from resistance keen from the troops from Sheik Mohamed Benchabira to Bou-Saâda. The city abdicates on November 25th, 1849 but the French troops had to employ heavy artillery. After the conquest, Theodore Pein appears however as a builder who allows the urban development; he is even described as “ creative of Bou-Saâda ”. He in particular was on the initiative of the plantation of a poplar plantation and the central place of the city bore its name a long time.
But the soldier shows also a keen combatant. December 2nd, 1852, it takes part in the catch of Laghouat at the sides in particular of the future generals Margueritte and of Barail. This episode is particularly bloody, it will write later: “ carnage was dreadful; the dwellings, the tents from abroad drawn up on the places, the streets, the courses were strewn with corpses. ”.
Its feats of arms are worth to him a continuous promotion in the army: it is named Major in 1849, Lieutenant-colonel in 1855 and finally Colonel in 1859. Wounded several times, carried with the day order, it is high with the rank of commander about the Légion of honor on August 27th, 1860
