Theodore Deck
Born with Guebwiller on January 2nd 1823 and died in Paris on May 15th 1891, Theodore Deck is the central figure of the French Céramique at the 19th century.
It is at a poêlier of Strasbourg that it becomes acquainted with this art: at this time, one still manufactures there stoves in Faïence. Deck is enthusiast Ceramicses and he wants to know some more. Thus it starts a great study trip through the Empire Austro-Hungarian and the Germany making profitable like Alsacien its knowledge of the German . But it is in Paris that up leading it its steps in end 1847. It attends the artistic mediums there but it is primarily with the technical sides that it is interested. In 1861, it presents to the Salon arts and industries of Paris some achievements which make it at once recognize like a Master.
Its workshops become prosperous but Deck is not jealous of the revolutionary processes which result from its research. In that, it breaks with the secrecy which traditionally recovers the strings of trade. It accommodates the artists of its time and places at their disposal a broad range of new techniques as a glaze on gold sheet as well as a new enamel pallet of which it found the inspiration in the Turkish productions or Persians. Of all that, it is especially a superb blue which the profane public retained: a bright turquoise nuance which it adopts at once under the name of Bleu of Deck or Bleu Deck .
Deck trains also apprentices who will make in their turn school. Most famous of them, Edmond Lachenal, will continue the work of the large ceramist until in the meanders of the Art nouveau.
In addition to this life filled well, Deck is interested in the policy. In 1870, like Alsacien, it must choose if it will be French or German. He chooses the first solution. Sympathizer of the Radical party, he will be assistant of the mayor in XVe district.
Author of a masterly treaty on earthenware, it becomes in 1887 - supreme recognition - director of the Manufacture of Sevres.
He rests since 1891 with the Cimetière Montparnasse. It is his/her friend Bartholdi who carried out his monument.
Deck ceramics is joined together with the Musée of Florival in Guebwiller.
