Theodor Zwinger (Pasteur)

Theodor Zwinger , Protestant theologist, wire of Jakob Zwinger, was born with Basle, in 1597, the birthday day of died of Œcolampade, that his/her father wished to see reviving in him for the glory of the reformed Church.

Orphan at the thirteen years age, after having completed his course of philosophy, it remained some undecided time on the choice of the state which it was to embrace. Theodor was not unaware of that his/her father intended it for the evangelic career; but a rich person library of medicine and a cabinet of chemistry of which it had the provision, and especially glory that its grandfather and his father were acquired in practice medical, were as many reasons which were to commit it to go on their traces. It thus decided for medicine; but hardly it had taken this resolution that it dangerously fell sick. He saw in this accident the right punishment of his disobedience to the wills of his father and made wish, if he recovered health, be devoted to the service of the Church. As of this moment, it was delivered without slackening to the study of theology. He learned at the same time the Eastern languages and made use of all the helps which the history and antiquities for the intelligence of the crowned texts can get. Admitted, in 1617, with the saint ministry, it wanted, before accepting a vocation, improving its knowledge by the voyages. Consequently, he visited the Germany, the Netherlands, the England, crossed the France and returned in his fatherland in 1619. Attache successively with various churches, it was, in 1627, named Pasteur of Saint-Theodore. A contagious disease which appeared two years after him provides the occasion to announce its zeal and its really Christian charity. Escaped only, of all the Bay pastors, with the devastations of the contagion, he redoubled heat to carry helps and consolations to the unhappy one; but it was reached itself by the fever and was reduced at any end. The rights that Theodore had been acquired with the public recognition were not forgotten. Elected official, on January 1st 1630, first Pasteur and superintendent of the churches of Basle, the November 30th according to, it was named professor of the Old Testament to the academy. This pulpit was that which OEcolampade had illustrated; thus achieves the wish of the father of Theodor. It fills it twenty-four years in a very brilliant way, and died the December 27th 1654.
