Theodor Schwann (December 7th 1810 - January 11th 1882) was a physiologist, histologist and German cytologist . He studied medicine in the universities of Bonn, Würzburg and Berlin where he was the assistant of the famous physiologist Johannes Muller.

Among his contributions to the Biology, one can quote the development of the theory of the cell (1839), the discovery of the cells of Schwann in the Nervous system, the discovery and the study of the Pepsine and the invention of the term Métabolisme.

The cellular theory said that all the living organisms consist of basic elements called the cells.
