Theodor Heuss
Theodor Heuss , born on January 31st, 1884 in Brackenheim, was a liberal politician German. He was federal president of 1949 to 1959.
He studies the history of art and the economy and joined after his studies the circle of Friedrich Neumann which will strongly mark its political and social ideas. April 11th, 1908 in Strasbourg, he is married in Elly Knapp by Pasteur Albert Schweitzer. From 1905 to 1912 he is the editor association of the newspaper published by Neumann, Die Hilfe ( the Assistance) and of 1912 to 1918 of the Neckar-Zeitung . From 1920 to 1924 he is director of studies then until 1933 university lecturer in policy in Hochschule of Berlin. Between 1924 and 1928 then between 1930 and 1933 he is appointed German Democratic party (DDP) with the Reichstag, left which he joined in 1918. Under the Third Reich, it is constrained to decrease its leading and political activities.
After the fall of Reich, he is minister of religion of the Land of Wurtemberg-Bade, in Landtag of which he sits of 1945 to 1949 for the democratic Popular party (DVP). He favorable to the fusion of the various liberal parties of the Western zones of occupation and is achieved this goal in 1948 with the formation of the Parti liberal-democrat (FDP) of which he becomes president the same year. He is member of the parliamentary Conseil in load of the drafting of the Fundamental law.
The first federal Assemblée elects it federal president on September 12th, 1949. The fundamental law of Bonn grants to the president primarily representative functions, contrary to the Constitution of Weimar. Theodor Heuss succeeds in giving to this function the greatest consideration of the people. It joins again consciously with the political, democratic and spiritual traditions stopped by the Nazi regime. It stresses of its actions of interior policy on the harmonization of the political oppositions. Its official visits make it possible Germany to acquire an increasing consideration abroad. It is renewed in its functions in 1954. He refuses into 1959 the changes of the Fundamental law necessary to a third mandate.
In 1959 it is rewarded by the price for Peace for the German editors. He dies on December 12th, 1963 with Stuttgart.
