Geography

The layer of topsoil is in general not very thick. Under this layer one finds: - in the valleys of the alluvia of boggy nature, - on the lower slopes, crossed by the railroad and trunk road of the red Diluvium, - on the remainder of the slopes the chalk, - finally in the highest part the Argiles constitute the silt of the plates. The 3/5 of the territory form a very permeable ground.

The territory is limited to north and the North-western by the Luce, with the Western by the Avre. The culminating point (approximately 110 m) is in extreme cases Southern territory; of this point the plate drops soft inclined on all the sides towards the Avre and the Luce to low reach the point with their Confluent (34m approximately).

History

The history of Thennes is very closely related to that of Berteaucourt-les-Thennes. The ground of Thennes belonged since 780 to the Abbaye of Corbie. It passes then as Fief to the lords of Boves, to return to the XIIIe century to the monks of Corbie. With the Xe century there were with Thennes these monks who named the Maire there and made extract the Tourbe. To quote among the Strongholds: the Stronghold Baubet given to responsibility of drive out frogs when the abbot of Corbie came to eat in Thennes and the Fief of the bridge of Thennes then with toll.

Thennes had to undoubtedly suffer from the Guerres with the Spain with the XVIIe century, especially at the time of the seat of Corbie in 1636. On this date some boatmen of Hailles, Thennes and Castel set fire to the provisioning which the Spaniards intended for the place Corbie. Louis XIII then with Démuin, exempted them size them and their descendants.

Thennes saw the Cosaques in 1814 - 1815, then the German invasion of 1870. In 1870, the village was very tested, the Prussian having delivered combat to Mézières (6km) and to Cachy (4km). On 22 young people of Thennes who combatirent this year there, 2 perish.

During the War of 1914-1918, being near the frontline, the village was largely destroyed, all constructions were touched. The German attack of the 21 March 1918 on the face Saint Quentin - Fère had succeeded in creating a 80 depth km pocket in the Anglo-French face. This one was completely broken between the rivers Avre and Luce. The 27 March 1918, general Foch, commander-in-chief of the allied troops, sent reinforcements and charged the 1st French Army with the Général Debeney extending its face and with maintaining at all costs the connection with the English army of the Général Gough which moved back towards Villers-Bretonneux and Amiens. The order was thus given to French to resist until death on the plate of Santerre. The general Canadian Seely, former minister Canadian for the war, had its headquarters to Berteaucourt-les-Thennes in March 1918. The 8 August 1918, the French troops started from Thennes and Berteaucourt-les-Thennes counter-attacked in direction of Villers-with-Maples.
