Theater off Tragedy

Theater Off Tragedy is a group of Gothic metal Norwegian originating in Stavanger, formed in 1992. The group was precursory, with The 3rd and the Mortal and The Gathering, of the atmospheric vagueness of metal with feminine voice in vogue in Europe since the end of the year 1990. Their first albums particularly constitute an outstanding influence for the kind Gothic metal.

Characteristic

Although other groups did it sporadically before, Theater off Tragedy was one of the first to completely systematize the use of a duality of contrasted songs: A male-intonated voice (often having recourse to the Death grunt) and a éthérée feminine voice (style which one tends to indicate of " beautiful and the bête").

The music of the group in the beginning thus alternates the cavernous and female parts vocal male crystalline on bottom of fronts of saturated guitars, arpeggios crystalline and tablecloths of keyboards, the whole played at generally slow intervals.

The group is also characterized by the use of the modern English incipient (former English of the Renaissance) in their texts (at least in the first 3 albums.)

The style of the group, with the passing of years, evolved to a style more Mainstream and close to the pop rock'n'roll. Starting from the album Music , the group indeed, carried out drastic changes in its style, particularly inspired by the industrial rock'n'roll, giving up with the incipient passage the modern English writing and the use of grunts.

The group also mainly owes its success with the personality of its singer Liv Kristine Espenæs. However the latter was dismissed group in 2003, according to its dires without knowing why:

" I was rather made transfer like a swine, without the least explanation, the least telephone call. I discovered that I did not form any more part of the group while surfant on Internet, one evening, at moi."

According to the group the reason would have been a divergence of opinion on the level of the esthetic orientation of the group, as the declaration official of the group affirms it at the time:

" Having worked together during nearly 10 years, we arrived from there at a point where we were with differences in opinions which cannot be reconciled as well as a number of completely incompatible ideas for the future developments of the group. (…)That it is noted however that it there no animosity on behalf of the group against Liv, and wishes we to him the best for its work.” référence

Liv Christine was thus gone from there to form Leaves' Eyes in company of the members of the group Death German metal Atrocity. Since, a new singer was recruited (Nell Sigland) and a new album left (storm) in 2006.

The group left its 6th album on March 24th, 2006 and a European round was followed from there, with Gothminister as a first part. New the opus sees the group moving away from the industrial and electronic style of the last two albums, and can be seen as a meeting of esthetics of the albums Aegis and Musique
