The Théâtre of the Gymnasium Marie Bell is located at the 38, Boulevard Good-News in the 10th district of Paris.

Inaugurated on December 23rd 1820 by Delestre-Poirson, the theater of the Gymnasium was to be used as place of drive to the pupils of the conservatory , by representing there initially only parts in an act or reduced to one act.

Poirson quickly made play of the parts of two acts, then of three, and made a exculsif contract with Eugene Scribe. It made install lighting with gas as of 1823 and, by the good graces of the duchess of Berry, the place ennorgueillit in 1824 of the title of theater of Madam .

Closed in June 1830 for restoration, the theater began again, after the revolution of July, the Dramatic name of Gymnase .

In 1844, Montigny takes the direction of the theater, and to attract a public more, gives up little by little the repertory of parts morals and edifying to support the sentimental kind, more in vogue, with “compromising situations, cold turpitudes, calculated insolences, sobs and anguishes”. The playwrights are called Balzac, Emile Augier, Georges Sand, Edmond About, Victorien Sardou, Octave Layer, Meilhac and Halévy, Alexandre Dumas father and wire.

In 1926, the playwright Henry Bernstein becomes about it the director and created there the majority of its most famous works: Samson, Rafaie, the Gallery of the Ices, Mello, Happiness or the Messenger .

Then, starting from 1939, the Gymnasium allows the creation of many works of Marcel Pagnol, Jean Cocteau, Marc-Gilbert Sauvajon, Sacha Guitry, Félicien Marceau and Jean Genet. The tragic actress Marie Bell takes the direction of the theater in 1962, where she interprets in particular a particularly outstanding Phèdre.
