Theater of Patolampi

The theater of Patolampi or in Finnish Patolampiteatteri is a group of theater Finnish which with the characteristic not to play of the parts only during the summer; it is thus about a theater of outdoor. It is a group of actors amateurs who play each summer a new part written by their scenario writer and director Anja Hämäläinen.

History of the group

The theater of Patolampi was officially founded in 1995 but already in 1994 the first small part was played. The theater is located in a small village of Lappi which is in the south-west of Finland. At the time operation of this group was a co-operation of several associations. The first part (played in 1994) was called “Saunatonttuja ja menninkäisiä” (Imps of sauna), a fairy tale put in scene by the actors amateurs.

In 1995 a practical workshop of theater was founded whose name was the theater of Patolampi. The small played part this year there was called “Rantamökki” (a country cottage aubord of a lake). It was written by Sirkku-Maija Tuominen and Anja Hämäläinen.

The first part full length was played in summer 1996. The part “Salaisuuksia saunanrappusilla” (Secrecies in the staircases of sauna) was a success.

The mentality of group

All the parts played by the group are written for the theater of Patolampi, a fact which is single between all the theaters of outdoor in Finland. Up to 2001 the acts were free for the spectators. In 2002 a new room of outdoor whose entry is paying was built to answer growing waiting of the public

As well the actors as the scenario writers and the director are amateurs and voluntary. All the product is reserved for the general expenditure and the evenings organized for the actors (each summer there are two of them). One evening of theater is also organized for the actors themselves.

Other activities

The theater of Patolampi remains very active during any year. The repetitions for the summer begin in April and at the beginning of May the group starts to repeat outside. The first is normally last Sunday of July. The theater season lasts only two weeks, but it is one very intensive season. Each autumn the group organizes one musical evening and theatrical in co-operation with associations of the commune of Lappi. There is music and the sketches prepared by the group. The evening finishes by a ball. The theater of Patolampi is also a group of artists much in demand in the family celebrations, etc
