The Théâtre of Marcellus was set up on the southern part of the Champ de Mars to Rome. The building site, started with César, was finished by Auguste which starts again the company as of 30 av. J. - C.

The theater is dedicated to the son-in-law and to nephew of Auguste Marcellus who died 23 av. J. - C., whereas the building is completed in 13 av. J. - C. Although unfinished, it was used for the secular Jeux of 17 av. J. - C.

The theater is intended for the scenic representations and more precisely with the spectacles where only three actors intervene who have exchanges with the chorus which moves on the orchestrated .

The theater of Marcellus is the second stone theater in Rome, after that of Pompée. With the difference of this one, the theater of Marcellus is by no means in a religious environment.

It could contain until: 15000 spectators and was composed of three stages. Like decoration, Auguste used marble columns which decorated before the house of an aristocrat, Aemilius Scaurus . A private individual should not compete with the Princeps , the first of the citizens.

The building remains still mainly in Rome, because it was used as palate with the Moyen-âge. It is the first example of a stone theater in Rome, built on Voûte S and which remained.
