Theater of Gaîté
Opened in 1792 on the Boulevard of the Temple, the Théâtre of Gaîté is the successor of the Théâtre of the Large-Dancers of the King directed by Jean-Baptiste Nicolet.
Jean-Baptiste Nicolet had installed, Boulevard of the Temple, a spectacle in the taste of those of the Foire, which attracted a public growing in spite of the complaints of the Commedia dell'Arte, officially protected by the privilege. In 1772, it obtained the authorization to become Théâtre of the Large Dancers of the King and took in 1792 the name of Theater of Gaîté. Entirely rebuilt in the same place, the theater is reopened on November 3rd 1808. Set fire to in 1835 during a general repetition, it is again rebuilt at the same place.
Destroyed in 1861 at the time of the opening of the Voltaire boulevard, the Theater of Gaîté is rebuilt street Papin by the architect Alphonse Cusin. It then bears the name of Théâtre of Gaîté-Lyric the and knows its hours of glory under the Second Empire. Jacques Offenbach is the director in 1872. It becomes the temple of the operetta until in 1963. In 1918, the Russian Ballets of Serge Diaghilev occur there with an immense success. In the Years 1930, the Country of the Smile is created with Willy Thunis.
After the Second world war, Henri Montjoye and his wife Germaine Roger take the direction of the theater. Many successes are then created: Andalusia , Knight of the Sky and Visa for the love with Shine Mariano, Colorado with Michel Dens, Minnie Moustache with the companions of the Song. In 1974, the Square Silvia-Monfort and the first school of Cirque settle some time there.
The theater is closed since 1989, following a bankruptcy. Of 1989 with 1991, it was into large bets destroyed and transformed into amusement park by Jean Chalopin. The big room, who counted: 1500 places and an orchestra pit which can accommodate forty musicians is removed. A simple restoration would however have made it possible to safeguard this inheritance of the Parisian opera house.
The town hall of Paris envisaged to make of them a center of numerical arts and current musics. This new center should open in 2008.
