Theater of Châtelet
The theater of Châtelet is a theater located in the I {{er}} district of Paris and inaugurated in 1862; it programs today mainly opera S and traditional concerts.
History
The imperial theater of Châtelet is built between 1860 and 1862 by Gabriel Davioud at the request of the baron Haussmann, at the same time as current the Théâtre of the City which faces him on other side of the Place of Châtelet. It counted then: 2500 places and was used for theatrical representations . It is inaugurated the April 19th 1862, in the presence of the Impératrice, with Rothomago of Ennery, Clairville and Monnier.
At the beginning of the 20th century, its programming opens with the Opérette, the Ballet, concerts of Classical music and popular, and even, for a time, with projections tographic Cinéma.
The dance holds at the 20th century a particular place in the programming: Châtelet accommodates international companies like the Russian Ballets of Sergei Diaghilev, or the ballet of current the Théâtre Mariinsky. He saw the creation of Petrouchka of Stravinski the June 3rd 1911, and that of Parade of Satie and Cocteau the May 18th 1917.
With the desk, the theater accommodates many type-setters and foreign leaders, like Tchaïkovski, Mahler and Richard Strauss.
As from 1929, the theater of Châtelet will become the temple of the operetta with large spectacle under the direction of Maurice Lehmann. Many successes there will be created like Nina Rosa (1931) with André Baugé, the Inn of the Horse-White (1948, 1953,1960 and 1968), Valses of Vienna (1943, 1957,1964 and 1974), For Don Carlos (1950) with Georges Guétary, the Singer of Mexico City (1951) which remains a thousand of times at the poster with Luis Mariano and Rudy Hirigoyen, the Golden Fleece (1954) with André Dassary, the Mediterranean (1956) with Tino Rossi , Rose of Christmas (1957) with Andre Dassary, the Secrecy of Marco Polo (1958) with Shine Mariano, the Hammer of the lampions (1961) and Mr Carnaval (1965) with Georges Guétary and Jean Richard. Maurice Lehmann calls upon type-setters such as Siegmund Romberg, Henri Christiné, Maurice Yvain, Pierre Petit, Francis Lopez, Henri Betti, Jean-Jacques Damase, Gerard Calvi and Charles Aznavour. Its successor, Marcel Lamy, former director of the Op3era Comique, produces both last operetta of Shine Mariano, the Prince of Madrid (1967) and the gold Caravel (1969). After dubious moments, Châtelet renews with success during more than 600 representations with Gipsy (1972) then the Volga (1976) of Francis Lopez with Jose Todaro.
In 1979, the direction is taken again by the town of Paris. After a deep restoration, it reopens in 1980 under the name of musical theater of Paris. The operetta is not forgotten and one not produced there Parisian life , the merry Widow , the Bat and the Girl of Mrs Angot . Seasons of opera follow one another it with in particular of the cycles Verdi, Russian, Wagner with artists of international reputes. Acoustics is again worked over again in 1989, the curtain of scene is painted by Gerard Garouste, and the room takes again the name of theater of Châtelet.
Stephan Lissner, her director of 1995 with 1999, again made improve acoustics and the visibility.
It accommodated in residence the Orchestre of Paris and the Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France; the two formations will settle in September 2006 with the Salle Pleyel. The Philharmonia Orchestrated, of London, takes residence there each year since 1993.
