Theater of Balbus
the theater of Balbus is stone a permanent theater of the ancient Rome. It is third has to be set up in the city after largest, that of Pumped builds in 55 av. JC, and the Théâtre of Marcellus from which construction began under César but finished only in 13 av. JC, after one period of abandonment.
Construction
Contrary to what took place for the other theaters, the construction of the theater of Balbus was not wished by a leader of Rome but by Lucius Cornelius Balbus. Balbus is a Spanish which, following its victories in Africa in 19 av. JC, obtains the agreement of the emperor Auguste to build this theater with the money of the spoils of the victories. It was inaugurated in the year 13 av Jc.
Composition of the theater
The theater of Balbus remains relatively small compared to the others. Indeed the theater of Pumped could accommodate up to 18000 spectators and that of Marcellus 15000 whereas that of Balbus accommodates only 11000 of them. The thêatre was composed of three stages: the lower stage of a doric nature , the ionic second and the Corinthian third , and opened by a series of arcade S. Its diameter was of approximately 90 m whereas those of the theater of Pumped and the theater of Marcellus were respectively of 150 m and of 130 Mr. Behind of the wall of scene spread a gantry, the crypta Balbi, which, according to recent assumptions, was to shelter the prefecture vigils.
Disappearance
In 80 ap JC a fire destroyed a share of the building of which there remain almost nothing today.
