Theater in the United States

The theater in the United States draws its roots in the Western tradition and borrows its bases from the European theater. The Musical comedy is the shape of theater most appreciated with the the United States, with for principal focus Broadway with New York.

History

Beginnings

Oldest testimonys on the American theater goes up at the time colonial English. A theater existed already with Williamsburg in 1715, and it is known that Thomas Kean had played Richard III with New York in 1750. The theater amateur developed as of the XVIIe century. It is known that the troop of Lewis Hallam, coming from London, occurred with Williamsburg in 1752. It is Lewis Hallam, Jr. which founded the " company américaine" and a theater in New York opened. The most radical puritans condemned the theatrical expression: laws prohibiting the representations were even applied in the Massachusetts in 1750, Pennsylvania in 1759, and with Rhode Island in 1761.
