Synopsis

Bernard and Arlette Coudray carry out a quiet life in a commune close to Grenoble, to the installation of new neighbors, Philippe and Mathilde Bauchard. Bernard and Mathilde know themselves already, since seven years before they lived a passion in love and tumultuous. Inevitably, the former lovers will revive their relation, in the secrecy, whereas the social life continues normally.

Until the day when Bernard, wedged in an inextricable situation and pushed by the jealousy, acknowledges publicly at the time of a reception, its love for Mathilde. After this glare, helping time, the two couples continue their respective lives, but Mathilde, depressive must be hospitalized; one incites Bernard to visit him. Bauchard moved, and an evening, Bernard hears noises in the close house. Mathilde is there which awaits it. It kills it and commits suicide.

The film takes seat after the Last Subway , the masterly fresco of the German occupation. Truffaut returns to a history intimates, simple, a relation of couple of banal appearance, with a party taken of retreat and neutrality. At the beginning, Bernard is a man monolithic, sure of him, responsible, with a family life and a trade. The appearance of Mathilde goes ressusciter old passion and its possessive power goes unrelentingly infantiliser Bernard, until him to make lose all its reference marks, family, social, professional.
