Summary

In a France marked by the Fascism and the premises of the Second world war, of the beings and their destinies without managing cross meet to find happiness. There are Michel Vigaud, seducer and dilettante who finds in the love for Elisabeth and the new experiment of the political commitment, the gravity which missed up to that point with its existence; there is Bielenki, emigrated, capitalist Juif cynical and disillusioned, in a treacherous direction with his, which does not hesitate to wound and mislead Michel while agreeing to marry Elisabeth, thus ruining the friendship which linked them. There is Elisabeth finally, successively disappointed by Michel and Bielenki, and which will finally agree to marry a " Swedish without visage".

Even if the dream and the action are dedicated to the failure (desperate Michel will find death during the DrĂ´le of war) and even if the history confirms its violence here, the love remains the only ideal and the only force really authentic, able to give a direction to all painful contradictions which tear these individual destinies.

the white Horse is representative of the whole of the work of Elsa Triolet. It seizes the moment when the individual destinies make irruption inside the History, the tensions and contradictions which result from their confrontation, and reveals the engagement of the writer.
