Comment
This film represents a fertile model of the Hollywood melodrama. Its supported lyricism and the deployed topics (the social rise, the loss of the sight, trancendant love, etc) will be in particular a source of inspiration for John Mr. Stahl and Douglas Sirk. The original title Seventh Heaven - literally Seventh paradise - translated the aspiration with the transcendence of the history of love which does not imply only any more two people but also the divine figure always present. The immanence of its presence justifies the acts and their consequences. Any destiny is some thus justified. It is while reaching the paradise, symbolically represented here by the apartment of the hero, that happiness occurs. The stages which the two characters under our eyes assemble (a vertical dolly follows their progression with a staircase out of cut and connections invisible) represents the scale which leads mud to the seventh heaven as advertisement already first forward paperboard of film:
For those who will climb it, there has ladder leading from the depths to the heights - from the sewer to the stars -- the ladder off Courage .
